UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man’s Youth Representative, Rachel Smith is encouraging young people to get involved in protecting the future of our Island founding a new Youth Network for people aged 18-35, researching ways to better involve young people in shaping the future of our Biosphere Reserve, and encouraging them to taking action for the biggest issue affecting our future - climate change.
UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man (UBIOM) is also calling on people with a passion for our environment and Manx culture, aged 18-35, to apply to fill the second Youth Representative post. This is a unique opportunity for a passionate young leader to contribute to the ongoing work of engaging more young people in our Biosphere Reserve, ensuring their voices are meaningfully represented at events and influential meetings. Applications are open until 15th October for the position.
In addition to this exciting role, the UBIOM Youth Network officially launches on 8th October from 5pm at Santander Work Café. Consisting of icebreakers, refreshments, and fabulous prizes, there will be an opportunity to meet with current members and find out more information about the network.
Rachel said,
“When I returned to the Island after finishing my degree in Ecology and Conservation, I found it difficult to meet passionate, like-minded people my age eager to make a positive difference on our Island. We were disconnected and isolated. It was my mission to change that, and after lots of hard work and many conversations, this vision is becoming a reality.”
Peyton Smith, a member of the UBIOM Youth Network, said,
“I moved here from Virginia by myself a year ago and I’m very thankful for being a part of the network. It’s helped me make new friends and build a team of fellow conservationists.”
To further understand and enhance youth engagement in Biosphere and Net Zero Isle of Man initiatives, a survey is open to capture insights of how the youth community is engaged with environmental issues and cultural heritage in the Isle of Man.
