Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword—it’s something which customers are increasingly expecting and demanding of businesses. A local Recruitment Agency based in a Manx stone cottage with a commitment to environmental responsibility took a significant leap forward this year with the installation of a new renewable energy system.

Here’s a closer look at their journey, the challenges they faced, and the triumphs they celebrated.

The drive for a renewable energy system

The decision to install a renewable energy system at Search & Select was driven by the personal principles of the directors as well as the business looking to enhance their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) credentials and followed on from the installation of new windows with a better insulation rating and LED lights throughout the building.

The new energy system replaced an old gas-powered setup, marking a significant step towards sustainability and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Overcoming challenges with the building

The Search and Select office is within an old stone-built structure originally comprising of two Manx cottages, which posed some insulation challenges, which in turn impact on the effectiveness of any heating system.

Solar panel installation required planning permission, which was a slow and complex process due to the building’s location in a conservation zone. Noise level checks and late-stage Building Control checks took considerably time. Scaffolding in the graveyard required church approval, and while the project was going through various planning stages the work had to be staggered rather than completed in one continuous project.

There were limited contractors available at the time, but Search and Select were pleased with their choice of Manx Solar Electrical Ltd, who provided an excellent service, including the necessary noise level checks and roofing work.

The Outcome:

Despite hurdles, the installation was a success. Solar panels, Tesla battery storage, and an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) were installed, with the latter two installed and  completed in two weeks. Manx Solar provided Search and Select team with comprehensive training on the system controls, which are user-friendly. The AI feature in the batteries ensures the system adapts to varying weather conditions, enhancing efficiency.

While the immediate cost benefits are limited, the long-term advantages are significant. The system boosts Search and Select’s ESG credentials and provides operational benefits such as business continuity during power outages.

Search and Select’s journey underscores the complexities small businesses may encounter in adopting sustainable practices. However, their experience also highlights the potential rewards—both environmental and reputational. As they continue to navigate the path of sustainability, Search and Select have set an inspiring example for other businesses to follow.

A sustainable system for the future

The road to renewable energy can be challenging, but the journey is worth it. For Search and Select, the installation of their new system is more than just a business decision—it’s a commitment to a sustainable future. As they continue to reap the benefits of their investment, they stand as a testament to the power of perseverance and the promise of green energy.
