In a typical household, most of the energy you buy is used to provide heating. So if you want to cut your carbon footprint significantly, you need to look at whether you can fit a low carbon heating system.

The Renewable Heating Scenario Report 2021 establishes different scenarios for reducing emissions caused by heating buildings by 2050.

Each acknowledges that fossil fuel (oil and gas) heating systems will be gradually phased out from 2025, and compares the level of change needed and associated costs.

The report suggests that current heating methods can be replaced by more efficient low carbon systems such as air source heat pumps, direct electric, biofuels or district heating systems, where multiple buildings are heated from a central source.

In this short video, Robert Honeyman, the lead consultant from Gemserve who developed the report, provides a brief overview of the report and what it aims to achieve.
